Rocket City Short Film Festival 2008
The Alabama Filmmaker’s Co-op annual Rocket City Short Film Festival will be Oct. 18 at the Flying Monkey Arts Center, 2211 Seminole Drive.
This festival is for local and area filmmakers. First-time, amateur and professional artists are encouraged to submit films of up to 15 minutes or less. All genres are welcome
The audience will award two prizes: youth entries (17 and under) with a $50 cash prize and adult entries with a $100 cash prize. Professional filmmakers who have a short film they would like to have screened but not entered into the competition are also welcome.
German screenwriter Chris Silber, co-author of the award-winning “Goodbye Lenin,” has submitted his short film “Ice Wind” for screening in the festival. Silber, who recently relocated to the Huntsville area with his family, recently spoke with Film Co-op workshop participants about his career.

Fantasy Playhouseannounces auditions
Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater will hold auditions for “A Christmas Carol” on Saturday and Sept. 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fantasy Arts Center, 3312 Long Ave.
Parts are available for ages 6 through adult. Those wishing to audition must be the minimum age by audition dates. Everyone must be prepared to sing and capable of speaking in a British accent. Take sheet music. An accompanist will be provided.
Performances will be Dec. 5-7 and Dec. 11-14 at the Von Braun Center Playhouse.

Homespun artcoming to library
The Madison County Homemakers and Community Leaders will present Cultural Arts Day Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, 915 Monroe St.
On display will be items from 16 categories, ranging from photography and painting through quilting and paper crafts. All items are produced by the members of the 14 Madison County homemaker clubs.
Entrance is free, and refreshments will be served.
Final Concert by theRiver rescheduled
The final concert in the City of Decatur Parks and Recreation Department’s 2008 Paul Stroud Concerts by the River series was rained out Aug. 25. The show has been rescheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. at Rhodes Ferry Park, located off Market Street.
The final concert will feature vocalists Katie Burney and Ragen Ivey.
Concertgoers are invited to take picnic baskets, lawn chairs and blankets.

Craftsmen’s fall showat VBC beginning Friday
The Northeast Alabama Craftsmen’s Association Fall Craft Show, which will feature more than 150 artisans, begins Friday at the Von Braun Center.
Hours are Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
The show will feature teddy bears, dolls, doll furniture, pottery, ornaments, toys, jewelry, clothes, room decor and more.
Free movies showFriday at Lowe Mill
Friday is Free Film Night Under the Stars beginning at 8 p.m. on the back dock at Lowe Mill, 2211 Seminole Drive.
The evening of film is presented by Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment, The Dead Workers Party, The Bobby Milk Film Society and Ironweedfilms.com. Four documentary films about peace will show outside if weather permits.
The new Happy Tummy restaurant will be open beforehand.

Art Krewe setting up Oktoberfest at museum
Join the Art Krewe on Thursday for plenty of schnitzel and German beer at the Krewe’s first Oktoberfest, which members hope will become an annual event. The party, including musical entertainment, will be on the museum’s north patio overlooking Big Spring Park.
This event is free for Art Krewe members and a $10 suggested donation for non-members.

Local pianist playsCarnegie Hall
Sarkis Baltaian, concert pianist and assistant professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, will perform with the Armenian General Benevolent Union at Carnegie Hall in New York on Saturday.
Baltaian joined the UAH music faculty in August.
Baltaian has gained an international reputation as a concert pianist, chamber musician and recording artist. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1999 and has performed throughout the world.

Guitar duo to openseason of concerts
A concert by the Godwin-Thompson Guitar Duo will open the 2008-2009 season for the Lincoln County Arts Council in Fayetteville, Tenn.
The concert, with guitarists Mark Godwin and Robert Thompson, who are both guitar professors, will include works by Isaac Albeniz, Luigi Boccherini, Claude Debussy and Paulo Bellinati. They will also play an original composition by Godwin.
The concert is Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. at Lincoln County High School, located at 1233 Huntsville Highway in Fayetteville.
